Ministry of Justice revealed, on Thursday, agreements with the United Nations for the purpose of expanding prisons, while it responded to reports of torture in its prisons.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Laibi said, according to the official agency, that "what is rumored about the existence of cases of torture in the prisons of the Ministry of Justice are rumors aimed at miscarriage and extortion."
He added that "the global health instructions include not opening prisons due to the pandemic."
And on the existence of a plan to expand prisons, Laibi confirmed that "there are agreements with the United Nations for the purpose of expanding prisons," pointing out that "these prisons are inhabited by prisoners because of the large numbers and the lack of buildings."
The Director of the Juvenile Reform Department in Baghdad, Kamel Amin Hashem, confirmed to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, on May 17th, that "there is overcrowding in prisons, especially since successive governments have not built a juvenile prison because these juveniles have a specificity in the programs to re-empower them and integrate them."
