Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The Minister of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Reber Ahmed, said today, Tuesday, that the Sinjar Agreement, which was concluded last year, will be on the negotiating table with the Iraqi forces to form the government.
In October 2020, Erbil and Baghdad concluded an agreement, supposedly aimed at restoring stability to Sinjar. Among other objectives, the agreement includes the removal of illegal armed groups from the city, especially the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Popular Mobilization.
Reber Ahmed's speech came during his participation in the "Peace and Security Forum in the Middle East", which started this morning and is hosted by the American University of Kurdistan - Duhok.
"It has been more than a year since the conclusion of the Sinjar agreement, but unfortunately on the tables, there is no problem with the federal government, and the brother, Prime Minister Al-Kazemi has always confirmed that they are serious about implementing the agreement," said Reber Ahmed.
He added, "There are obstacles from official and unofficial parties that do not allow the government to carry out its duties, and there are non-Iraqi forces that have occupied Sinjar, represented by the PKK."
He continued, "During the events of October 2017, and President Barzani al-Hakim's decision to withdraw from Sinjar to avoid a military confrontation with the Iraqi forces, the PKK elements were allowed to fill the void, as well as Iraqi militia groups that help the Kurdish workers to tighten control over Sinjar without caring about the increasing suffering they cause to the Yazidis." ".
Many armed forces were formed in and around Sinjar over a period of three years, but the government was unable to control them, which contributed to the destabilization of the region.
Sinjar is one of the disputed areas between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, and it needs at least ten billion dollars to rehabilitate its infrastructure.
