Shafaq News/ The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed, on Friday, during his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, his "strong" desire to visit Iraq.
In a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said, "Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York, to discuss the latest developments in Iraq and the region."
The Iraqi minister expressed "Iraq's thanks to the United Nations for its support in various fields, the efforts of the United Nations mission in Baghdad, and the assistance it provides to displaced families in cooperation with international organizations to provide the necessary necessities to enhance security and stability in Iraq," adding, "We look forward to a greater role for the United Nations in its efforts." Reconstruction of the infrastructure of Iraqi cities, and the return of the displaced to their areas of residence.
Hussein praised "the role of the United Nations and the Security Council in supporting the electoral process in Iraq, noting that the political forces are intensifying their dialogues to form the new government and provide the necessary atmosphere to preserve constitutional times." He pointed out that "the Federal Supreme Court ratified the final results of the Iraqi parliament elections for the year 2021, and issued its decision on the constitutionality of the first session of the Iraqi parliament, which was held on December 9, 2022, which led to the election of the Speaker and his two deputies."
The Iraqi minister touched on "Iraq's relations with neighboring countries as well as the Arab Gulf states, and stressed that Iraq's current policy is based on the principle of dialogue, communication, building good and balanced relations to solve outstanding problems, and avoiding the use of force, because it complicates solutions and threatens regional security."
For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, offered his congratulations to Iraq, and we congratulate you for the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution No. (2621) on February 22, 2022 and the vote on the resolution unanimously, stressing that “we are committed to full support for Iraq, and we highly value its role in building bridges between the surrounding regional countries.” He gathered the opposites at one table, as he did at the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, and he hoped that the Iraqi government would continue this fruitful foreign policy and create an atmosphere of dialogue between countries, and that Iraq would play this pivotal role in the region. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed his strong desire to visit Iraq.
For his part, the Iraqi minister expressed his "happiness to receive His Excellency the Secretary-General in Baghdad and to inform himself of the situation in Iraq and the changes that have taken place, and he is fully welcomed by the Iraqi people."
