With the high rates of poverty and hunger in Iraq, there are fears of a stifling food crisis, as the number of Iraqis living under the poverty line has exceeded 10 million.
According to the information received, poverty rates in Iraq are constantly rising, due to the lack of agricultural, industrial and commercial plans, as well as the lack of job opportunities and the failure to support citizens with adequate monthly food rations.
The Iraqi parliament had begun the second reading of the draft emergency support resolution for food security and development. In this regard, Manar Al-Obaidi, head of the (Future Iraq) Foundation, said: "If this problem is not resolved quickly, Iraq will face a major crisis of hunger and poverty."
Al-Obaidi explained, "The food crisis has begun, especially with regard to the shortage of wheat and flour, and warehouses must be filled with these two materials quickly, even though the state does not have the ability to do so."
He said, "The draft resolution, which has begun its second reading, if passed, will enable the government to allocate more budget" for food security.
According to the data of the Iraqi Ministry of Planning, there are more than 10 million Iraqis below the poverty line, and more than 5 million citizens receive social welfare salaries.
According to the available information, Iraqi warehouses are devoid of any foodstuffs to distribute food rations to citizens before the month of Ramadan, and that edible oil is about to run out as well, and food prices have witnessed a significant increase in the markets.
