    Economy News - Baghdad

On Thursday, an American website revealed that Saudi Arabia has pressured a number of Arab countries, including Iraq, to support the reduction of oil production in (OPEC +), while indicating that Riyadh's goal is to reduce Washington's "anger" against it.
"Axios" website said, "Saudi Arabia pressured Arab countries to support the reduction of oil production during the OPEC + meeting a few days ago," according to a former US official and an Arab official.
The site added, "The goal of the Saudi pressure is likely to avoid isolation by the United States and to show that the decision, which angered the administration of US President Joe Biden, was a collective decision by all Arab countries in OPEC +."
The Biden administration blames Saudi Arabia for the move, which the United States claims will strengthen Russia.
Saudi officials justify that "the American anger has nothing to do with Russia, but is due to internal political concerns about the rise in oil prices before the midterm elections next November."
Axios added that "Saudi officials have tried in recent days with Arab countries that are members of OPEC + and several Arab countries that are not members of OPEC, and they demanded public statements of support."
An official from one of the Arab countries, whose name was not mentioned by the website, said that "the Saudi pressure was at a high level, and the Saudis pressured very hard."
A former US official familiar with the case, also unnamed, said that "Saudi officials pressured Arab countries to repeat their message that the OPEC + decision was purely economic and based on market conditions and not political."
On Sunday, countries from the OPEC + group expressed their support for the decision to cut production that was approved this month, after the United States said that Saudi Arabia had pushed some countries in the group to take this decision, in an escalation of a war of words with Riyadh, according to Reuters.
