    Economy News-Baghdad
A British press report described the Basra oil fields as one of the worst fields in the world in terms of toxic emissions and its significant effects on the increase in cancer cases in the population of neighboring areas.
The report, prepared by the BBC, stated that "satellite data revealed that the Rumaila field in Basra, southern Iraq, is the worst oil field in terms of emissions rates resulting from flare gas in the whole world, and flare gas is not only an important source of gas emissions that cause In the phenomenon of global warming, it is even known to be responsible for emissions of petroleum benzene, which increases the risk of cancer, especially leukemia in children.
He added, "Dozens of people who live in different communities near oil fields, such as the Rumaila field, told us the same stories, and confirmed that they have a relative or friend who suffers from cancer, often leukemia."
Al-Rumaila, which houses several thousand people, is known as the "Shadow City" by the locals because it is cut off from the rest of the regions and lacks basic services. Ali and his friends call it "The Cemetery".
The report indicated that "there are no published studies on cancer rates among these communities, and we discovered later that the data on this subject is constantly kept by the Iraqi government. A document issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Health that was leaked to us revealed that the rate of cancer is three times higher in Basra than it is." contained in the official records.
He pointed out that "some of those who live and work in Rumaila sent us video clips that gave us a glimpse of what life is like there. We faced difficulties in obtaining permission to enter the area and photograph ourselves, as our official requests were rejected at least five times."
And the Rumaila field, which extends over an area of 1,800 square kilometers, is larger than some small countries and is surrounded by several checkpoints. Behind these points, there are patrols from the oilfield police and private security companies working for the oil companies, roaming the area.
The authors of the report tried to "depict the experience of measuring pollution ourselves, and it was based on the advice of leading pollution experts in the world. We trained on that before we went there, and the experts advised us to use what is known as diffusion tubes, which are small copper cylinders with a filter filter inside them to absorb pollutants. We worked with a scientist environment in the region Professor Shukri Al-Hassan, who is the only one working in this field, is called to conduct tests over a period of two weeks among the residents of the neighboring populations of four different oil fields within 10 kilometers of the torch gas towers, including the Rumaila field. We also took urine samples from the children to detect the presence of Any manifestations of poisoning associated with exposure to gas flaring operations.
The results of the test indicated that “52 children whom we conducted the test had elevated levels of metabolite naphthalene in the samples, a substance believed to be a carcinogen. All places are below the safe limit that the World Health Organization says should be zero."
However, the report notes that "it is not clear who is responsible for the elimination of gas flaring. The Iraqi government owns the oil field, but it is BP that manages it along with its partners."
According to the report, the former Oil Minister, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, confirmed that reducing gas flaring is the responsibility of British Petroleum (BP), but BP says that the responsibility lies with the operators of the oil field, which is the Rumaila Operating Authority (ROW), which was jointly founded by BP. With other companies and owns a 48 percent stake in it.
Employees from within the company estimated "the cost of the improvements, which aim to reduce emissions from burning the flare gas, at between 3 and 5 million dollars, which is a very small part of its record quarterly total profits, which amounted to 8 billion dollars."
