    Alsumaria News - International

Research by the United Nations showed today, Thursday, that nearly 50 thousand large dams around the world may lose more than a quarter of their storage capacity by the year 2050 as a result of the accumulation of sediments that undermine water and energy security.

The[url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/44785/%D8%AD%D9%84%D9%81 %D8%B4%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%84 %D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A/ar/]United Nations[/url]University said that "the dam's capacity is expected to decrease from 6 trillion cubic meters to 4.655 trillion cubic meters by 2050, which requires measures to be taken to address the problem and protect critical storage infrastructure."

Silt builds up in reservoirs as a result of interruptions in natural water flows and can damage hydroelectric turbines and interrupt electric power generation.

This can impede sediment flow into rivers linked to dams, making upstream areas more vulnerable to flooding and habitat erosion downstream.

The United Nations study looked at the data of more than 47,000 dams in 150 countries and said that 16% of the original capacity has already been lost, adding that the United States faces losses of 34% by 2050, and it is estimated that[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]You will lose 23%, and[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]26%, and[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]20%.

"I would argue that the question that should be asked now is what are the alternatives to dams - including in power generation - given that they are being phased out," he added.
