Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, inaugurated the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad, after they confirmed, during in-depth discussions held yesterday, Saturday, that the Kingdom of Morocco's move to open its embassy will be a starting point for a partnership that is consistent with the volume of historical relations between the two sides.
During a joint press conference, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein described his Moroccan counterpart's visit to Baghdad as historic, and said that it comes after more than a quarter of a century has passed, indicating that the two countries will establish strong and solid relations in the next stage. The Iraqi foreign minister added, "Several discussions took place on a group of issues, and emphasis was placed on creating the necessary mechanisms to establish this immediate and future relationship between the two parties," noting that "Morocco plays an important role in the political arena."
He explained, "There are about 40 agreements between the two countries, but these agreements date back to an old period of time, and discussions were held about creating a legal mechanism to study these understandings in a manner appropriate to the situation of the two countries."
In turn, Bourita stressed that "our visit to Iraq is historic because it will witness the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad, and this confirms the strength of relations between Iraq and Morocco," noting that "Morocco will continue to support the choices of the Iraqi people."
