    Baghdad today - Baghdad
One of the most prominent remnants of technology that has briefly swept the world, and one of the most important variants of online crime, is “cyber extortion”, which criminals use to demand money from people and companies through the threat of posting private or shameful matters and confidential data on social media.
"Electronic extortion in Iraq is concentrated in 3 direct dimensions," said technology expert Rida Abbas, in an exclusive interview with "Baghdad Today."
    The most prominent reasons
Abbas said, "The fraud and fraud, i.e. electronic extortion, is caused by the first and foremost cause of the user's neglect of the mechanisms of dealing with websites and platforms directly and his lack of awareness of the importance of their direct security, in addition to the fact that some mobile phone companies do not care about the user's interest as much as the importance of their direct interests."
He explained that "communication companies allow the numbers left after 6 months to anyone, and through this loophole, all sites that the number was an indication of can be controlled."

    Bargain on  Facebook
He added, "Facebook, the platform on which fraud and fraud operations are concentrated, is attractive to all groups without exception, unlike other platforms that have some limitations."
The expert pointed out that "any person, when he corresponds, passes through Messenger, and here exploitation takes place according to what he has, and thus the bargaining process takes place with financial or other goals," stressing "the need to pay attention to the steps to secure accounts."
    Increase in cyber extortion crimes
Recent years have witnessed a significant increase in the number of cybercrimes committed in Iraq. The Ministry of Interior documented many crimes targeting victims, especially girls and women. For example, the Iraqi police arrested about 60 people who formed gangs to target teenage girls, take their photos, and blackmail them for money or sex. These gangs or lone criminals often hack into social media accounts including Facebook or Instagram, as well as smartphones in order to grab inappropriate photos and videos for use in blackmailing victims. If this has happened to you, you are not alone. You can report these crimes.
    Electronic extortion penalty
According to Iraqi law, cybercrime is divided into several parts, including threats and extortion, in Articles 430-432 of the Penal Code. The penalty for these crimes, depending on the severity of the crime, is imprisonment from one to seven years.
