The British newspaper “The Guardian” reported that the Israeli government is facing increasing pressure to exchange about 230 hostages in Gaza for thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The source explained that Giora Eiland, former head of the Israeli National Security Council, was among those calling for exchanging about 5,000 Palestinians, including Hamas fighters, for hostages held in Gaza.
Some relatives of the detainees also conveyed this message during a “candid meeting” with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday in Tel Aviv.
The British newspaper explained that the intensity of pressure has increased over the past few hours, while Israel continues its violent bombing of Gaza, which has so far left more than 8,000 dead.
Some families fear that the military attack on Gaza will lead to the death of their loved ones.
Jackie Levy, who kidnapped three of his relatives, said: “We do not feel that this issue is a priority for the state. The government has slipped into petty politics.”
For his part, Zeev Sherman, a cousin of a missing 19-year-old youth, said: “Every day they are not released, they are exposed to greater danger.”
On the other hand, the Israeli government asserts that “the return of the hostages represents an equal goal with the other goal, which is the destruction of Hamas.”
It is believed that among the hostages are people holding passports from 25 foreign countries, including the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Argentina and Thailand.
Previous talks resulted in the release of 4 female hostages, in two separate operations.
