Calls to put sewage projects on the list of priorities

Every time the rains warn of the fragility and age of the infrastructure of most governorates and the need for most regions to pay attention from the concerned authorities to implement new networks and projects that contribute to preventing their drowning and renewed tragedy with the rain showers, rather than being satisfied with overhead works that please the onlookers.
On top of all this and that, instead of local governments in the governorates rushing to take urgent measures to rescue the afflicted and announce the return of their activity to the forefront, we find them rushing to announce holidays.
The recent heavy rains that fell on most regions of the country caused damage to many areas in the north, center and south of the country in a scene that has become familiar as a result of the aging of most infrastructure projects and the failure to implement other qualitative ones that contribute to absorbing the increases in population numbers and the expansion of the regions.
Director of the Sewerage Department in the Baghdad Municipality, Mahmoud Aziz, told “Al-Sabah”: The intensity of the rainfall the day before yesterday, which reached 68 mm per hour in areas south of Baghdad and 36 mm in other areas, is more than the capacity of the stations by dozens of times. He added that the early preparations made by the secretariat last April, which included cleaning all the main lines of the sewage stations with the latest thermal sonar devices, contributed to overcoming this and withdrawing all those quantities without drowning, he said.
The director of the sewage department attributed the occurrence of drowning in some areas, including Zayouna and others, to the power outage in some stations, which led to their work stopping for a few minutes until the generators that had been prepared earlier were activated and kerosene was supplied, which led to the accumulation of water and the need for time to be able to Sewer lines from collecting collected water.
He stated that the department has prepared a proactive plan in preparation for the wave of rain expected during the next week, in addition to a plan for the next winter season that will be implemented soon.
For his part, the head of the service effort team, Jaber Al-Hassani, told “Al-Sabah”: The team checked last night all the areas in which the team implemented infrastructure projects to identify the extent of the work of rainwater drainage networks and to know the obstacles, but no drowning was detected in the area. These areas previously suffered from the accumulation of mud and water in the roads.
Social media sites circulated scenes of many areas in the governorates being flooded due to the heavy rain wave that fell the day before yesterday, and most governorates announced the closure of departments because of this.
In turn, the specialist in infrastructure affairs, Engineer Karim Al-Nasiri, told “Al-Sabah”: Most of the infrastructure projects in the governorates are old and need to implement new projects, especially in the districts and sub-districts, but these projects need large sums, while placing them on the list of priorities of the projects that are hoped to be implemented. Including it in the plans for the year 2024.
He added that there are governorates where the percentage of people served by sewage and rainwater networks is still low, so they need treatments, especially since the solution of providing sink mechanisms and missiles is not sufficient to address the situation quickly in order to avoid the accumulation of rainwater.
