Today, Saturday, economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi revealed the reasons for the repeated bombing of the Kormor field in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, stressing that it undermined the government’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in gas.
Al-Marsoumi said in an interview followed by Mawazine News: “The strategic importance of the Kormor gas field in Chamchamal district in Sulaymaniyah, with an area of 135 square kilometers, makes it the largest free gas producing field in Iraq with proven reserves of up to 8.2 trillion cubic feet and a production of 452.” One million cubic feet of dry gas, 15,000 barrels of condensate, and more than 1,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas per day. The field also produces the gas necessary to generate 4,200 megawatts of electricity per day, of which 2,800 megawatts are sent to the Kurdistan region and the rest to the governorates of Kirkuk and Mosul.
Al-Marsoumi added, “The Kormor field transports natural gas through pipes to the Chamchamal and Erbil power plants, and provides 67 percent of the Kurdistan region’s electricity,” pointing out that “the field is being invested by Dana Gas and Al Hilal Company, 35 percent for each of them, and 10 percent for each.” One of the companies OMV, MOL and RWE.
He continued, "The future vision for the field is to increase the level of production to 630 million standard cubic feet in 2023, but the work was greatly delayed for several reasons, most notably the repeated bombing of the Khor Mor field," stressing that "the repeated bombing of the field led to stopping work on expanding production in the Kormor field and the company left." The American company (Extran) is working on the field, which is partly financed through a $250 million agreement with the American International Development Finance Corporation.
Regarding the repeated bombing of the Khor Mor field, Al-Marsoumi indicated that “the reason is to undermine the Iraqi government’s plans aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in gas and achieving energy security in Iraq,” explaining that “given the presence of promising plans in the Iraqi Kurdistan region in the field of natural gas transportation.” To Europe, these plans have begun to receive great international attention recently, in light of the escalating repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis on the energy sector in Europe. Therefore, steps have accelerated towards developing a strategic plan to establish a pipeline to transport natural gas, starting primarily from the Kormor field and passing through Erbil. It ends in the city of Dohuk, after which it is connected to a Turkish pipeline network that allows it to be transported to the European Union countries.”
