South Dakota Indian hospital threatened with funds cutoff

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The list of government-run hospitals caring for Native Americans that have been found to be operating under less than ideal circumstances is growing.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Monday threatened to cut off funding for the hospital administered by the Indian Health Service that’s located in Rapid City, South Dakota. The facility is the third IHS-run hospital in South Dakota to receive such a threat within the past year.
CMS threatened to end the Rapid City hospital’s ability to bill the government for services provided to Medicare- and Medicaid-eligible patients after inspectors during an unannounced visit earlier this month determined patients were not receiving appropriate medical screening examinations.
The hospital has until June 15 to correct the deficiencies to avoid losing funds.
