    Baghdad today - Sulaymaniyah
Economic expert and academic at Sulaymaniyah University, Farman Hussein, said today, Thursday (September 14, 2023), that Sulaymaniyah Governorate is the Iraqi governorate most affected by the rise in dollar exchange rates.
The Kurdistan Region, especially Sulaymaniyah Governorate, has been witnessing widespread protests and strikes for some time due to the delay in disbursing employees’ salaries.
Hussein said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Sulaymaniyah is suffering from a major economic crisis as a result of delayed payment of salaries and high tax rates."
He added, "The rise in the dollar exchange rate led to an increase in poverty rates and unemployment in the governorate to record rates that reached more than 20% over previous years, and thus Sulaymaniyah paid the price of the rise in the dollar more than other governorates."
Today, Thursday (September 7, 2023), a number of government departments and institutions in Sulaymaniyah Governorate announced a strike from official working hours, in protest against the delay in the distribution of salaries.
The correspondent of "Baghdad Today" in the governorate stated, "A number of departments and institutions in Sulaymaniyah Governorate announced a strike from official working hours this Thursday morning, due to the delay in distributing salaries to their employees, for the months of July and August."
He continued, "It is expected that the strike will expand and include other departments in the coming days if salaries are further delayed."
The Kurdish writer and political analyst, Adalat Abdullah, warned on Wednesday (August 2, 2023) of the worsening situation in the Kurdistan region due to the continued delay in disbursing employees’ salaries, indicating that the Kurdish citizen holds the Kurdistan Regional Government responsible for the delayed disbursement of his salary.
Abdullah told "Baghdad Today" that "the citizen and employee hold the Kurdistan government responsible for the delay in disbursing salaries because they receive salaries from a specific executive body, which is the regional government."
He added that "the reasons for delaying the payment of salaries do not mean anything to the citizen because he is looking for his salary in any way," noting that "the citizen believes that the regional government must solve the problem and prevent delaying salaries."
Abdullah pointed out that "the delay in disbursing salaries is a result of citizen dissatisfaction, and the situation will explode if this problem is not resolved."
On Friday (September 1, 2023), the representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Gharib Ahmed, revealed the most prominent obstacles that prevent Baghdad from sending financial allocations to the Kurdistan region, while he expected that Baghdad would send an advance to Erbil to pay employees’ salaries for only two months.
Ahmed said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the political differences have ended, there are technical points, and the Kurdish delegation present in Baghdad is making understandings with the aim of resolving all the outstanding points regarding non-oil revenues.”
He added, "During the month of September, several meetings will take place, and all differences and outstanding points between the two parties will be resolved, while the federal government is expected to send employees' salaries for the months of July and August as a financial advance to manage the affairs of the region during the coming days."
The representative continued, "The political dispute ended, with the agreement of all parties within the state administration coalition, and there is no obstacle standing in the way of sending the region's share."
