The Cairo Criminal Court on Saturday (June 17) referred the papers of 30 accused in the assassination of Egyptian Attorney General Hisham Barakat in 2015 to the Mufti of the Republic in preparation for the death sentence.
The court set the hearing on July 22 to pronounce the verdict after the mufti's opinion, which is not binding on the court. After pronouncing the sentence, the convicts are entitled to appeal against it.
A total of 67 defendants were tried in the case, including 51 in attendance.
Barakat was killed in a car bomb attack on his motorcade in Cairo, an attack Egyptian authorities have accused the Muslim Brotherhood of carrying out with the help of Hamas militants.
    Both groups deny the accusations.
The President of the Court pronounced the names of 31 accused, but he referred to one accused who repeated his name twice, one wrong and then corrected the name.
Among those who were referred to the Mufti Yahya Mousa, member of the Guidance Bureau of the Muslim Brotherhood, who is among those who were tried in absentia.
Last year, the Interior Ministry broadcast video footage of defendants who confessed to traveling to Gaza and receiving combat training with the help of Hamas, but some denied the confessions before the court.
The defendants said they made confessions under torture and their lawyers asked the court to refer them to the medical examination.
Egypt is facing a security challenge by terrorists in the organization of preachers active in the province of North Sinai, where hundreds of soldiers and police were killed.
There have also been attacks on Christians, which have killed nearly 100 people since December.
Barakat is the biggest Egyptian official killed by militants since the ousting of former Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi in mid-2013 after mass protests over his one-year rule.
