An international organization demanding Spain stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia

    09/08/2017

An international human rights organization recently revealed that the Spanish government handed over to Saudi Arabia more than 300 containers loaded with explosives, and expressed concern about their use in committing war crimes in Yemen.

In a report, Greenpeace asked the government of Mariano Rajoy to stop all arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

"We have raised this issue with the Spanish government and the latter has assured us that the documents accompanying the issuance of licenses for the sale of these weapons clearly emphasize their non-use in Yemen and that there is a commitment by Saudi Arabia to do so," Alberto Stevens, spokesman for the organization, said in televised comments.

"But we have real doubts that the Saudi authorities will not meet this commitment, especially if we take into account the record of Riyadh in particular in this area."

He pointed out that his organization, "urged the Spanish government to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia; because of the risk that they are used to commit atrocities and war crimes in Yemen."

A spokesman for the organization "Greenpeace" Spain is the third exporter of weapons to Saudi Arabia after the United States of America and the United Kingdom, pointing out that Saudi Arabia in recent months received more than 300 explosive materials from the government of Mariano Rajoy.

Reports from international human rights organizations confirm that the Saudi-led coalition planes used to bomb Yemeni areas, internationally banned weapons, including cluster bombs and phosphorus, which left thousands of civilian victims. At the same time, the United States and the United Kingdom demanded a halt to arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Background The attacks on unarmed civilians in Yemen since March 26, 2015. The case arose after a man in the northern port of Spain refused to take part in monitoring his transfer of the explosive container because of his opposition to the war on Yemen.
