De Mistura sets the date for the Geneva talks on Syria
The UN Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, announced the start of the eighth round of the Geneva negotiations on Syria no later than the end of October.
This came in a statement presented by the UN envoy during a meeting before the UN Security Council, and renewed his call on the United Nations to "protect civilians in Idlib, Deir al-Zour, al-Raqqa and everywhere else where the war continues."
"I reaffirm the importance of this time frame to allow the parties concerned to use this important month from now, to create the conditions necessary for the talks to be meaningful," de Mistura said.
"I call on the two sides to assess the situation with realism and responsibility towards the Syrian people and to prepare seriously for participation in the Geneva talks without preconditions," he said.
De Mistura expressed his belief that "it is in the interest of the Assad regime and its duty to negotiate seriously with the opposition set out by the Security Council in resolution 2254 (2015)."
