The Italian government ordered naval forces to send military force to the eastern Mediterranean on the backdrop of tensions over the Italian ship belonging to Eni, which Turkey prevented from drilling near Cyprus.
Rome decided to deploy an additional military unit within the NATO mission "Sea Guardian" as a precautionary step.
According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the commander of the unit received orders to avoid any actions that would lead to increased tension between them and the Turkish forces besieging the Italian ship "Saipem" belonging to the company "Eni".
The Unit was mandated to be ready to assist the ship and to coordinate with other European military contingents in the region, in particular the Greek and Spanish fraternities there.
