President Donald Trump replaced national security adviser Herbert McMaster with John Bolton, former UN ambassador under President George W. Bush.
Trump, in a tweet on Twitter, thanked McMaster for the services he said had done "a great job".
Bolton, a supporter of the use of military force against North Korea and Iran, told Fox News that his job would be to ensure that the president enjoyed "a full range of options."
He will be Trump's third national security adviser within 14 months of his presence in the administration and will begin his new job next month.
McMaster became the latest in a series of eminent personalities who recently left the White House.
Last week, Trump dismissed Twitter's foreign secretary, Rex Tilerson, and named CIA Director Mike Pompeo instead.
The 69-year-old Bolton, famed for his heavy shoulders, served in the Republican administrations of presidents Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Bush (father) and George W. Bush.
President Bush appointed him as the United States' envoy to the United Nations, and diplomats have personally criticized his style during this period, calling him "very sharp."
Bolton, as an ardent neoconservative, helped build Saddam Hussein's possession of weapons of mass destruction, which he later discovered was wrong.
Bolton does not appear to have changed much of his views and views since his last post in office.
He has stood firmly with the invasion of Iraq, and has defended his own newspaper articles on the use of military force against North Korea and Iran.
In a brief statement on Thursday, General McMaster thanked President Trump for his appointment, saying he had asked to retire from the US military later this year.
The 55-year-old general will leave after serving for more than a year as national security adviser.
The White House said Trump and General McMaster had "bilaterally agreed" to quit the job, and rumors over the past weeks had indicated he was leaving.
The departure of General McMaster, a day after someone leaked to the White House, told the media that President Trump had been advised during this week's briefing not to congratulate Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election, but Trump congratulated him nonetheless.
White House correspondent Tara McClevey says General McMaster looks happy with his decision.
She adds that she recently saw him flirting with his West Wing colleagues and that he had prepared his exit strategy.
It was reported that Trump found that General McMaster's briefings were disturbing, and that he was also "aggressive and inclined to give lessons to others."
Trump was appointed in February last year as McMaster, replacing Michael Flynn, who was sacked three weeks and three days after taking office.
He was then sacked after giving misleading information to Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the Russian ambassador on US sanctions against Russia.
McMaster has served in the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as with government anti-corruption agencies.
