JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Iran's multiple options in retaliation against Israel after the killing of seven of its officers, including an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pilot, in a raid on the military airport in central Syria on April 9, the Haaretz daily reported.
The newspaper pointed out that among those options, according to the newspaper, to carry out the strike "Hezbollah" across the Lebanese border, or to come in the form of long-range missiles fired by Iran from its territory, or by targeting Israeli interests abroad.
However, the analysis precludes the first option, in light of the election in Lebanon on 6 May next, and its consequences, where a new parliament will be elected; Hezbollah may have preferred not to appear as a tool in Iran's hands.
As for the firing of rockets directly at Israel, it will prove the seriousness of the Iranian missile project and increase the international pressure on Tehran, especially under the US threat to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.
The Syrian front is the best option for Iran at this stage, which explains the great Israeli preparedness on the border with the Golan Heights, and the work of the army chief of staff to design all possible scenarios of war.
This possibility faces Tehran's fears of losing its influence in Syria, and Israel is able to mobilize international support to end it, following any such strike.
On the Russian role to control the situation on this front, says "Haaretz" that Tel Aviv does not trust Moscow, as the latter has its own accounts in the region, as she put it.
Recently, the two sides exchanged threats after Russia's decision to supply the Assad system with the S-300 anti-aircraft system, and Israel's announcement that it would bomb it during its transfer to a location based in Syria.
