The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday that Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah would lead the Palestinian delegation to the emergency Islamic summit on Jerusalem scheduled for Friday in Istanbul on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas.
The government said that al-Hamdallah left for Turkey heading a delegation of ministers to participate in the OIC emergency summit on serious developments in Palestine, especially in Jerusalem and Gaza.
The Palestinian presidency did not comment on the reasons for Abbas's absence from the emergency Islamic summit, although he underwent surgery in the middle ear on Tuesday in Ramallah.
At the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chairman of the 13th Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Organization announced the holding of the Istanbul Emergency Summit on Friday to discuss the grave developments in Palestine.
The summit will discuss the transfer of the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem on Monday, and the death of more than 60 Palestinians during demonstrations in the eastern Gaza Strip in clashes with the Israeli army in parallel.
According to Turkish sources, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Iranian President Hassan Rowhani are expected to attend the summit.[/ltr]
