US President Donald Trump said there had been significant progress in the Middle East but declined to say when the White House would propose his peace plan between Israelis and Palestinians.
Trump said during a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II in the White House that the situation has improved since the withdrawal of the United States from the Iranian nuclear agreement concluded in 2015.
"The situation has differed very much since we finished that matter [withdraw from the nuclear agreement]."
Trump and his senior adviser Jared Kouchner said in an interview with Al-Quds newspaper published on Sunday that Washington would announce its plan for peace in the Middle East soon and would go ahead with or without Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Kouchner visited Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt before holding talks on Friday and Saturday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
His remarks highlighted the deep differences between Washington and the Palestinian leadership, which have increased since Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December and moved the US embassy there, abandoning a US policy of decades.
Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state and have accused Kouchner of trying to weaken Abbas and what they call the moderate camp of their leader.
Kouchner refused to go into details of the US peace plan during his interview with Al-Quds newspaper. Kouchner did not meet Abbas.
The US plan is expected to propose solutions to key issues in the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, such as borders, the future of Israeli settlements, the fate of Palestinian refugees and security
