(AFP) - US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that "significant progress is being made" in talks aimed at defusing the escalation of the US-China trade war.
This came after a telephone conversation with the Chinese president with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
"Just now, I had a long and very good telephone conversation with Chinese President Shi," said Trump. "There is an agreement that goes very well."
"If that is achieved, it will be a very comprehensive agreement covering all the issues, areas and points of conflict ... There is great progress being made, and there is an agreement going forward," he said.
Later, Shi told state television channel CCTV that the two countries were "actively pushing ahead with the deal".
"It is hoped that the two teams will meet halfway and work hard and strive for an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial agreement and benefit the world," Shi was quoted as saying in the report late Saturday.
Trump and Shei agreed earlier this month to a "truce" in their 90-day trade war to allow more time for their teams to reach a more sustainable settlement.
Under the truce, Trump pledged that on January 1, he would pay his newly increased tariffs on Chinese products worth $ 200 billion at 10% and would not raise the rate to 25% as previously threatened.
China has imposed customs duties on imports worth $ 110 billion from the United States, including soybeans, planes and cars in response.
