International: Al Furat News: The deliberate suspension of the Internet and the closure of social media has cost the global economy more than $ 8 billion last year, according to a new report published by Internet research company Top10VPN, through which it examined the economic impact of Internet closures around the world throughout 2019 .
The cost of stopping the Internet was calculated by the non-governmental organization that monitors cyber security and Internet management NetBlocks and its tool to calculate the cost of stopping the Internet community, which uses indicators from the World Bank, the International Telecommunication Union, Eurostat and the US Census Bureau.
The shutdown of the Internet is the deliberate disruption of the Internet or digital communications, which makes these services inaccessible by a specific population, and Access Now says: Closures are often made by governments or authorities to exercise control over the flow of information.
Top10VPN tracked up to 18,225 hours of internet shutdown worldwide in 2019, whose total economic cost was $ 8.05 billion, and the researchers note that there were more closures in 2019 than ever before, with the total cost increasing by 235 Percent compared to 2016.
Last year saw 122 major accidents happen in 21 countries, meaning that there were 122 national or regional stops, as well as over 90 smaller stops in India and partial restrictions elsewhere, and the analysis found that closures were most often occurring in response to protests Civilian as authoritarian regimes seek to limit the flow of information.
The report said: The Middle East and North Africa region recorded the most costly cases of suspension, as it totaled $ 3.1 billion in the past year, while its total among the African countries south of Western Sahara reached about $ 2.2 billion, while its cost in Asia, the region That has the most documented shutdown hours, around $ 1.7 billion.
Iraq was the country that bore the highest cost of stopping, as the country's economy lost 2.3 billion dollars, and Iraq suffered 263 hours of deliberate interruption in the past year, which affected about 19 million users of the Internet, and Sudan came second with a cost of 1.8 billion dollars, With India ranked third with more than 100 deliberate closings at a total cost of $ 1.3 billion.
Top10VPN pointed out that the five countries whose economies were severely affected by the Internet and social media turmoil last year included Iraq, Sudan, India, Venezuela and Iran, and the social media platforms most affected by the government-led closures were WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
The world's most popular messaging app, WhatsApp, experienced 6,236 hours of disruption in 2019 in countries such as Sri Lanka, Sudan, and India.
The report predicted that these turmoil will continue amid continuing political turmoil, said Samuel Woodhams, one of the authors of the report: Stopping the Internet stops the entire digital economy, as well as causing permanent damage by contributing to the loss of investor confidence and harming the informal economy.
The results of Top10VPN come with government-led internet shutdown activities continuing around the world, as Russia for example passed a sovereign Internet law that entered into force on November 1, allowing the government to block Internet traffic from outside the country in an emergency.
The Russian law has been compared to the so-called Great Firewall in China, which slows internet traffic and blocks access to selected foreign websites, including Google and Facebook.
Despite its negative impact on the global economy, human rights and democratic processes, it is expected that the internet shutdowns will continue this year, with a high cost to the global economy, and Samuel Woodhams said: As the global digital economy continues to grow, the economic impact of Internet closure will increase. is over
