On August 13, 2014, in a meeting with Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif, and other officials in the ministry, he said, "Another feature of diplomatic skill is heroic flexibility, of which the peace of Imam al-Hassan al-Mujtaba is one of the greatest historical examples."

Later, the phrase "heroic flexibility" disappeared from Khamenei's dictionary, especially after US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement and stepped up the sanctions policy against Tehran. Khamenei responded to the American move by saying that if the Americans tore the nuclear deal, we will burn it ".
