Shafaq News/ The Secretary-General of the Iraqi Islamic Party, Representative Rashid Al-Azzawi revealed on Saturday that some candidates for the elections have spent millions of dollars and tried to buy society's dignitaries with valuable gifts and weapons, calling on the government and the Electoral Commission to intervene and hold these candidates accountable.
Al-Azzawi told Shafaq News Agency, "There is an unnatural extravagance of money for electoral campaigns, as some parties and candidates have spent millions of dollars in financing their electoral campaigns and buying votes."
And he indicated that "some candidates distributed cars and light weapons to tribal sheikhs and district notables to buy the votes of the voters, each according to his electoral district."
Al-Azzawi said, "The government and the High Elections Commission should hold these candidates and parties accountable and find out the sources of money spent on electoral campaigning, instead of pursuing young people and holding them accountable for tearing up the candidates' pictures."
It is noteworthy that local media and social networking sites are circulating news of an unprecedented extravagance of election campaigns and propaganda by some political blocs and parties, in addition to the fact that some candidates purchase electoral cards from citizens in exchange for sums of money to ensure that they vote for them.
On the other hand, many Iraqi cities witnessed acts of disruption and mutilation of some election candidates, which prompted the Supreme Judicial Council to issue an order to the security authorities to provide protection for electoral campaigns.
