International Energy expects significant growth in electricity consumption in Iraq
Shafaq News/ The International Energy Agency expected the growth of electrical energy consumption in Iraq by more than 6% annually, indicating that solar energy for power generation will not contribute significantly during the period 2022-2024.
The agency said in a report seen by Shafak News Agency, "The use of electricity in the Middle East grew by more than 3.5% in 2021 and will continue at an average rate of 2% during the period 2022-2024 with an increase in population growth, and an increase in demand for air conditioning and seawater desalination. and the expansion of energy use.
The agency expected that “the electricity consumption in Iraq will grow at a rapid rate of more than 6% annually until the year 2024,” noting that “the Iraqi state is gradually reducing the energy deficit with the completion of at least one gas investment project (Halfaya) and many projects to revitalize power plants. gas powered".
International Energy also indicated that "despite the ambitious plans to intensify solar energy generation of renewable energy, it is not expected to contribute significantly to Iraq's energy requirements in the period 2022-2024."
Iraq is holding talks with Gulf countries, led by Saudi Arabia, to import electricity from them by linking its organization with the Gulf system, after it had depended on Iran alone during the past years by importing 1200 megawatts as well as gas fuel to feed local electric power stations.
Iraq also intends to import electricity from Jordan and Turkey, in an effort from Baghdad to fill the shortage until building power stations that are able to meet local consumption.
Iraq has been suffering from a chronic electricity shortage crisis for decades as a result of the siege and successive wars. For many years, residents have protested against frequent power cuts, especially in the summer, when temperatures sometimes reach 50 degrees Celsius.
