    Economy News - Baghdad
On Friday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a support plan to encourage farmers to use modern irrigation techniques, while detailing the modern irrigation canal project and the Central Bank's initiative to support farmers.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mahdi Sahar, told the official news agency, “The winter cultivation plan between the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources was approved in two phases. Adding one million dunams to the irrigated areas.
Sahar indicated that "the plan was distributed to the governorates by agreement between the directorates of agriculture and water resources according to agricultural divisions," noting that "the cultivation plan for the current year provides 100 percent support for agricultural requirements (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and completion of fixed and pivotal sprayers), and the percentage of Subsidy to 50 percent for lands that do not use modern irrigation techniques.
He explained that "this decision will be implemented starting from the next winter agricultural season 2022-2023," calling on farmers to "use modern irrigation techniques through the Central Bank's initiative with interest-free loans to purchase fixed and pivot sprinklers and haulers, in addition to the modern irrigation channel project and the available modern mechanization." In the ministry, there will be an interest-free expansion of sprinklers for a period of 10 years.
He pointed out that "this project will divide subsidized prices for a period of 10 years, while the Central Bank's initiative is interest-free and for a period of 5 years, and farms can benefit from the support provided."
And he added, "The implementation of the plan is proceeding at a good pace, especially in the central and southern governorates, and there is a trend in the cultivation process in the western regions, especially since there are large areas in the governorates of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, Kirkuk, Anbar, and Diyala in the demi areas, in addition to the irrigated areas, which consider Wasit governorate one of the governorates." The first is for the wheat crop,” expressing his hope that “the current season will be good for the agricultural sector and the country in general.”
