Shafaq News/ In conjunction with the celebration of International Workers' Day, Iraqi workers face challenges and problems related to their legal rights, social and health security, which requires uniting efforts and redoubling work to develop concrete and real plans that address the deteriorating conditions of workers and industry in Iraq.

The world celebrates Labor Day or International Labor Day, on May 1 of each year, and it is an annual celebration that takes place in many countries to celebrate workers, and it is an official holiday in more than a hundred countries.
And the Iraqi government directed to suspend official working hours today, Monday, May 1, coinciding with International Labor Day.
    absence of rights
This holiday comes and the worker, Ali Karim (33 years), from Karbala governorate, suffers from the lack of rights and lack of job opportunities, which prompted - according to Karim - some employers to exploit workers by increasing working hours and reducing wages, and at the same time competing with the foreign worker for his Iraqi counterpart. in different business sectors.
During his speech to Shafaq News agency, Karim calls on the government, parliament and trade unions to "take care of workers and take decisions that contribute to improving their situation, including distributing financial grants to young people to establish their own projects, and to reduce the entry of foreign workers so that the Iraqi worker has the opportunity to work."
A member of the Iraqi Parliament, Razan Salih, confirmed to Shafaq News agency, "Workers in Iraq are currently suffering from many problems, which requires the government to provide job opportunities to eliminate unemployment, and support the country economically in agriculture and industry by revitalizing and activating local factories and developing all sectors." Determining an appropriate wage rate for workers to meet their living needs and solve their problems.
For her part, the activist and human rights defender, Sarah Jassim, warns that "the Iraqi worker's lack of awareness of his rights and the lack of job opportunities have led him to abandon them, especially since the percentage of workers in the government sector is 37 percent, meaning that the total labor force is more than 12 million. There are about 4-5 million workers in the private sector, of whom only 650 thousand workers were registered in the Social Security Law, which requires deep solutions and treatments.
In an interview with Shafaq News Agency, Jassim called for "the optimal application of laws to reduce many phenomena, including harassment in the workplace and illegal child labor, and at the same time benefit from the energies, competencies, funds and wealth in bringing about industrial and productive growth, which requires state institutions to issue Sound and successful economic decisions to prevent economic collapse that may threaten the Iraqi economy.
    A difficult situation
For his part, the researcher in economic affairs, Ahmed Eid, confirms that "the situation of the working class in Iraq is very difficult because of the challenges and problems it faces related to their legal rights and social and health security, and despite the issuance of Law 37 of 2015, the Iraqi worker suffers from cumulative problems represented by discrimination." and the greed of employers, in addition to the weakness of the law, which contributed to the marginalization of workers and depriving them of their most basic rights.”
Eid added to Shafaq News agency, "The state must take its role in activating the role of labor unions and keeping them away from politics, opening investment and providing job opportunities in the productive sectors, to relieve pressure on government sectors, and impose a limit on insurance and pension deductions. To achieve this, workers' salaries must be raised, including It is appropriate to ensure that the insurance dues can be paid.”
The head of the General Confederation of Trade Unions in Iraq, Starr Denbos, agrees with what the speakers put forward about the necessity of raising the minimum wage, amending the labor law to address abuse and sexual harassment, bringing out the union organization law, and most importantly, approving the pension and social security law that has been suspended for more than 6 years.
    'foreign labor chaos'
Denbos indicated, during his interview with Shafaq News agency, that "there is chaos in the file of foreign workers, estimated at more than a million workers, and they entered the country randomly without conditions, restrictions and monitoring from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, which negatively affected the rate of the unemployed in Iraq." .
The unemployment rate in Iraq is 16.5 percent, for ages between 15 and 60 years, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Planning in 2022 of the labor force in Iraq in cooperation with the International Labor Organization, according to what the spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, announced to Shafaq News agency.
In turn, the legal expert, Ali Al-Tamimi, explains the legality of the presence of foreign workers in Iraq by saying that "no law has been enacted for foreign workers in Iraq, and the applicable law is Labor Law 37 of 2015 and Foreigners' Residence Law 118 of 1978."
These laws stipulated that "the worker obtains a work permit as a condition for presence, a passport, an entry visa, and other security conditions, and the violator is usually fined an amount not exceeding $500, then deported according to the decision of the investigation court," according to Al-Tamimi.
He explained to Shafaq News agency, "The presence of these workers, who are estimated at one million workers without plans, is similar to the large number of imported cars, which has an impact on the economy, criminal security, unemployment, and the exit of money."
And he stresses the necessity of "enacting a special law for that detailing all their aspects, their presence and their deportation, and the information says that large numbers of them work without residency, and there is no solution before the judiciary but to deport them to their countries."
