Baghdad announced, on Wednesday, that it would summon the US ambassador due to State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller's remarks regarding the withdrawal of the decree appointing the head of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] .
On Tuesday, Miller criticized the Iraqi president's decision to cancel the decree recognizing Cardinal Sako, the patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, as head of the Christian church in the country, saying: "I will say that we are disturbed by Cardinal Sako's harassment ... and disturbed by the news of his departure from Baghdad."
The spokesman for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] said, in a statement reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "following Miller's statements on the recent decision to cancel the Republican Decree No. (147) of 2013 of Cardinal Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako, the Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Iraq is disappointed about the accusations leveled against the Iraqi government and the presidency regarding the decision taken to cancel a presidential decree that is not in line with the country's constitution, so the Presidency will summon the Ambassador of the United States of America in Baghdad on this issue."
He added, "Iraq has worked tirelessly alongside the United States since the adoption of the Iraqi constitution in 2005, to build an effective legal system that guarantees the rights of all citizens of the country, and it is a system that is ultimately followed and adhered to, and the presidency of the republic may not take measures that contradict the Iraqi constitution, as the primary role of the president of the republic is to protect the constitution and its legal frameworks."
He pointed out that "withdrawing the republican decree would not prejudice the religious or legal status of Cardinal Louis Sako," highlighting that "constitutionally, the President of the Republic in Iraq may not appoint or dismiss a sect leader chosen by his followers, and the president cannot favor or give priority to any group over another, at least to impose the leader of one sect over others, as it is a dangerous precedent if the president's office intervenes in these matters," noting that "the president has always respected Iraqi Christians and defended their rights throughout his career, and he refuses to refuse Absolutely any threats or offensive statements against the church or against any other sect in Iraq.
Iraqi President [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] had issued a republican decree withdrawing the republican decree appointing Patriarch Louis Sako, from the position of Patriarch of Babylon to the Chaldeans in Iraq and the world, and in charge of its endowments.
And the Iraqi Gazette, in its issue (4727) issued on July 3, 2023, published Republican Decree No. (31) to withdraw Republican Decree No. (147) of 2013 pertaining to Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako.
On Monday evening, the Chaldean Patriarchate in Iraq announced its rejection of the decision to withdraw the Republican decree appointing the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq, Louis Sako Raphael, expressing its surprise at this decision, which it considered "unprecedented in the country's history."
The Patriarchate's statement stated that " [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] of all sects looked at this unprecedented decision in the history of Iraq with astonishment, and considered it a malicious political decision not against the person of Patriarch Sako, who is known internally and externally for his national stances and integrity, but rather against the ancient patriarchal position in Iraq and the world."
The Chaldean Patriarchate, which is the largest church in Iraq, called for "returning matters to their normal state before they escalate into a crisis and produce unforeseen repercussions," noting that "Christians were and still are loyal Iraqis to their homeland and carry Iraq in their hearts."
