The Federal Integrity Commission in Iraq announced the discovery of tampering in 19 commercial transactions at the port of Umm Qasr in Basra Governorate. A person was arrested for receiving a bribe from a female citizen to facilitate her retirement procedures. This came in a statement issued by the Authority’s Investigations Department. The statement indicated that the seized transactions were tampered with and licenses were given to various companies without paying the state’s fees. Other transactions were also seized in which orders for the delivery of goods were tampered with and the weights of the goods were changed to exceed customs duties. Teams from the Integrity Commission were able to arrest one of those accused of receiving a bribe to facilitate the procedures for his retirement treatment for her husband, and the suspect admitted to colluding with employees of the Social Welfare Department in Basra.
This operation comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Iraq. The customs sector is considered one of the sectors most exposed to corruption in Iraq, and contributes to the loss of many government resources. The Federal Integrity Commission works to implement the law and fight corruption in this sector and other sectors in the country. It also combats manipulation in government transactions and promotes transparency and accountability. This latest operation in the port of Umm Qasr is a vivid example of the Authority’s efforts to combat corruption and implement justice.
It is important that government efforts and relevant bodies continue to fight corruption in Iraq. Oversight must be strengthened and efforts must be intensified to control violations and bring those involved to justice. Punishments for individuals and entities involved in corrupt practices must also be increased. The legal system must be strengthened and public administration must be improved to achieve greater transparency and integrity in all government departments. Citizens must also be made aware of the importance of reporting abuses and corruption and encouraged to participate in combating it positively. Through these continued efforts, a just and prosperous society can be built in Iraq.
