    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (November 24, 2023), Member of Parliament Salah Zaini Al-Tamimi called for an investigation to be opened into the Hamrin Lake file in northeastern Diyala Governorate, while indicating serious efforts to build joint dams with Iran.
Al-Tamimi confirmed to “Baghdad Today” that “the file of Lake Hamrin, far northeast of Diyala, needs an objective investigation,” noting that “the lake - (75 km northeast of Baqubah) - constitutes the lifeline for more than a million people in Diyala and is the strategic reservoir for water and was threatening The governorate was hit by floods 4 years ago after its reserves reached its peak and was close to breaking the barrier of 3 billion cubic meters, but after only a year it was exposed to an almost complete drought even though the reserves are sufficient for 5 years.
He pointed out that "what happened requires an objective investigation to answer the questions: Where did the water go? How did the lake empty within a short period? Despite being exposed to a flood that was the largest of its kind in more than 30 years."
Al-Tamimi explained, “Diyala is the most affected by the drought wave in Iraq,” noting that “there are serious efforts to build joint dams with Iran on the slopes of the border strip, as well as other dams on the valleys where torrential waters are pouring abundantly, whether in Wadi al-Naf or Tarlasak in order to Providing quantities capable of reducing the water crisis in severe drought seasons.”
Last July, the director of Al-Saadiya district (60 km northeast of Baqubah), Ahmed Al-Zarkushi, revealed the reasons for the closure of Lake Hamrin during the previous period, indicating that what happened was that the drought consumed more than 75% of the lake’s area.
In 2022, a government official in Diyala Governorate revealed the flow of torrents in Wadi Awsaj, the largest of the Hamrin valleys northeast of Diyala, indicating that “the torrents are heading towards Lake Hamrin, which leads to feeding it after a severe drought.”
