The State of Law coalition confirmed, on Sunday, the continuation of political differences over the administration of Kirkuk, indicating that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani will present an initiative to resolve the crisis.
Coalition member Saad Al-Muttalabi said, in a statement, “There is a state of loss of confidence between the parties to the conflict in Kirkuk Governorate, represented by a lack of concessions between them,” stressing that “the need has become urgent for political concessions to get out of the political impasse in the governorate, and that the Prime Minister “The ministers have the ability to reach a solution that satisfies all parties to the dispute.”
This comes at a time when most of Iraq's governorates, with the exception of Kirkuk and Diyala, completed more than a month ago the right to name their local governments, according to sectarian and party quotas, as influential forces took over key positions, such as the head of the provincial council and the governor.
Kirkuk witnessed the highest participation rates in Iraq in the provincial council elections, which took place on December 18, reaching 69 percent.
