A member of a human rights association, Bassem Omran, confirmed today, Sunday (March 24, 2024), that the month of Ramadan revealed the secrets of what he called black wealth among some segments, including politicians.
Imran said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “Ramadan gives space for some politicians and officials to show their piety by offering tables or distributing aid to the poor,” adding, “But it raises an important question: what is the source of that money for people who years ago had nothing.” Some of them even lived in rented houses.”
Imran added, "Ramadan shows the secrets of black wealth to some in the absence of the principle of where did you get this from, which reveals the secret of the wealth of officials and politicians who obtained huge sums of money overnight."
As for the President of the Diyala Society for Human Rights, Talib Al-Khazraji, for his part, he acknowledged that implementing the contents of the “Where do you get this from law” will address the phenomenon of accidental wealth for some politicians and officials,” stressing “the importance of focusing on the financial disclosure of any official from a general director or above to show what he owns before and after.” Hold the position."
He added, "The extreme wealth of some politicians and officials is a fact that no two people in Iraq disagree upon, and it raises dozens of question marks," pointing out that "scrutinizing the wealth of some will bring big surprises, not in Baghdad but in the rest of the provinces."
On Sunday (March 3, 2024), Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani issued three decisions to combat corruption.
The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", "The Prime Minister directed to strengthen internal control procedures and expand the scope of their work by raising the administrative level of audit and internal control formations in all government institutions, and setting effective tasks for them to exercise all types of oversight." Disbursing funds to achieve preventive control measures, prevent the waste or loss of public funds, preserve them, expose corruption, hold the corrupt accountable, take legal measures against them, provide legal protection for those working in that field, and motivate them to continue exercising their role efficiently, effectively, and stably.”
The statement added, "Al-Sudani also directed that the internal control guide prepared by the Federal Financial Supervision Office be circulated to all government agencies, to provide supervisory controls for administrative units in a way that contributes to raising their ability to achieve their goals and missions and prevent corruption."
Al-Sudani stressed, according to the statement, “the preparation of a draft law for the Federal Internal Oversight Authority based on the provisions of Article (108) of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005, in order to strengthen internal oversight in all government institutions and regulate previous preventive oversight procedures and subsequent follow-up and review.” To protect the levels of responsibility, integrity and transparency For public funds and all government institutions.
