    Follow-up / Sky Press:

French President Emmanuel Macaron said Wednesday he did not know whether US President Donald Trump would continue the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, which many in the West see as the best hope of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.

"I do not know what the US president will decide on May 12," McCron told reporters in Sydney after a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

McCron urged Trump to stay in touch when the two presidents met in Washington last week, but the White House was unconvinced.

White House press spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday that the agreement to limit Iran's development of nuclear weapons was based on "false claims" because Iran's nuclear program was more advanced than Tehran had suggested at the time of negotiating the deal.

McCron said he promoted the idea of a broad agreement with Iran during his meeting with Trump, noting that the idea was received "very positively".

"I just want to say that no matter what the decision is, we have to prepare for such an extended negotiation and a broader agreement because I think no one wants a war in the region and no one wants escalation on the tension in the region," McCron said.
