Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, said that there is a tendency by the government to transform the country from barren lands to green, as the ministry is preparing to secure water for the initiative to plant five million trees, whether with ground or surface water.
He added that the afforestation campaign is being contributed by a number of ministries, including Agriculture, the Municipality of Baghdad, and municipalities, in addition to the Popular Mobilization Forces initiative to plant the Samawa desert with approximately three million palm trees, in addition to planting olive and pomegranate trees that withstand the climatic conditions in the summer season, depending on groundwater and the use of drip irrigation. .
He pointed to the cultivation of large areas of desert areas by investors, with the implementation of the oasis project by the two holy shrines in Karbala and Najaf, in addition to the construction of a green belt for an oasis 27 km long southwest of Karbala to repel sand storms, and planting oases in desert lands with trees in the western region and the desert. The southern, Samawa desert, northern and eastern regions, depending on groundwater.
Abdullah pointed out the immediate implementation of a modern method of artificially feeding groundwater from dams for the purpose of storing additional water in wells, with the initiative to plant 178,000 trees in lands irrigated with surface water in locations surrounding dams and dams to improve the environmental situation, where 15,000 trees were planted.
He added that there is a campaign that will be implemented soon to plant 26,000 trees in the Mosul and Molasses Dam in Kirkuk, Hindiyah, Samarra, Fallujah, Ramadi and Abbasiya in Kufa, as the governorates continue their work in expanding the green spaces within the project to achieve the goals of sustainable development, in addition to facing the challenges of climate change that the country is witnessing, according to him.
