    Today, Friday (April 26, 2024), economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi commented on the Cabinet’s decision to raise the customs duty on imported eggs from 20% to 70% in order to support local production.
    Al-Marsoumi said in a blog post followed by “Baghdad Today” that “The Council of Ministers decided to raise the customs duty on imported eggs from 20% to 70% in order to support the local production of eggs, which is currently achieving self-sufficiency, noting that Iraq imports eggs worth about 900 million dollars annually and consumes "Iraqis produce about 7 billion eggs annually."
    He concluded by saying: "Iraqis are dying for makhlama and eggs with tomatoes."
    Yesterday, Thursday, the Council of Ministers decided to raise the rate of customs taxes on imported table eggs in support of local products.
    The text of the decision stated, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, received by “Baghdad Today”, that “as part of the government’s measures to protect the local product, support the national industry, and ensure the provision of job opportunities in important economic projects, the Council agreed to approve the recommendations of the meeting held on April 24.” / 2024, according to the following:
    1 - Imposing an additional customs duty of (50%) on imported table eggs, in addition to the original customs duty of (20%), approved pursuant to Cabinet Resolution (23672 of 2023).
    2- Obligating producers to affix standard labels for their product (product name, production date, and expiration date on the outer packaging).
    3- Obligating producers to place the production date and product label on each egg, within a maximum period of (3 months) from the date of issuance of this decision.
    4- Preventing the transfer of table eggs that do not carry the visas mentioned in Paragraph (2) above between governorates.
    5- Assigning the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture, the Competition and Monopoly Prevention Council, and the Iraqi Association for the Care of Poultry Producers to follow up on the implementation of the decision on an ongoing basis, provided that monthly reports are submitted to the Ministerial Council for the Economy.
    6- This decision will be implemented starting May 2, 2024.
