    BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
Russia is an ally of Iran in various fields and levels, with the two countries dating back to the era of the Russian empire and the Safavid state, especially in the security and economic fields. But observers have expressed surprise at Russia's preference for Iran in supplying the two countries with the air defense system.
Saudi Arabia has signed an agreement with Russia to supply it with the advanced S-400 missile system, while Russia has supplied Iran with the S-300 (old) missile system dating back to the 1970s or more.
The S-300 missile system acquired by Iran from the old Russian systems was produced by Almaz Scientific Industrial Corporation and the system has several different versions, all developed from S-300P (S-300P) Soviet air defense forces to deter aircraft and cruise missiles developed later versions of ballistic missile deterrent.
While the advanced S-400 air defense system to be supplied by Russia to Saudi Arabia was developed in the 1990s by the Almaz Central Design Office in Russia and is an upgrade to the S-300 and has been in service with the Russian armed forces since 2007.
The S-400 uses four different range missiles To cover the range of its operations: it uses a missile (400N6) range (400 km) for long-range targets, a missile (48N6) range (250 km) long-range targets, and a missile (9 M96E2) range (120 km) medium-range targets, and missile (9M96E) (40 km) for short-term goals. The AS-400, as of 2017, has been described as "one of the best air defense systems currently in place."
Observers believe Russia's aim is to supply Saudi Arabia and Iran with various missile systems to increase tension between the two countries to control the region, a message from Saudi Arabia to Iran that it has reached its strategic ally, Russia.
"Saudi Arabia, through its acquisition of the S-400, has been able to send a message to Iran that Saudi Arabia has managed to reach out to your Russian ally and have made a more sophisticated weapon deal with us," said Al-Hashimi, Of your weapon, we can also be an ally of Russia and balance relations) ".
"Saudi Arabia bought a $ 480 billion weapon from America, and at the same time a deal with Russia to buy the air defense system," he said, adding that "there will be a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran because it means a third world war, especially since Saudi Arabia is an ally of America, Ally of Russia. "
"Iran has an advanced weapon capable of striking the Gulf region and reaching Israel, which prompted Saudi Arabia to purchase the S-400 system after Iran had acquired the S-300 system," he said.
He pointed out that "arms deals between Saudi Arabia and Russia are used to cool the atmosphere and achieve balance in international relations, especially as Iran considers Russia as a source to arm it, and America is a source to arm Saudi Arabia."
