Gold fell slightly and held near two-month lows, under pressure from the dollar's rise ahead of a vote on a tax reform plan in the United States, but a possible halt to federal government operations gave price support.
Spot gold fell 0.17 percent to $ 1264.04 an ounce late in the US session, having earlier hit its lowest since October 6.
US gold futures for February delivery rose $ 1.20 or 0.1 percent to settle at $ 1266.10 an ounce.
The dollar rose to a two-week high against a basket of currencies on optimism of progress in a US tax bill.
The rise of the dollar makes possession of assets denominated in US currency such as gold more expensive for holders of other currencies.
Among other precious metals, silver fell 0.8 percent to $ 15.97 an ounce after hitting its lowest level since mid-July at $ 15.88
Platinum fell 1.78 percent to $ 899.50 an ounce after hitting its lowest level since July 11 at $ 895.
Palladium rose 1.35 percent to $ 995.90 an ounce.
