In a joint statement, Secretary of Defense James Matisse and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirsten Nielsen announced that US National Guard units were heading to the border with Mexico on the orders of President Donald Trump.
"Tonight, the National Guard moved to support the security mission along the southeastern border of the United States," Kristen Nielsen said on Twitter.
The statement stressed that the National Guard will deal with the security weaknesses discovered by the Internal Security Department "in close cooperation" with the governors of the states near the border.
US President Donald Trump said earlier he wanted to send between 2,000 and 4,000 US National Guard troops who would remain there to guard the border during the construction of the wall with Mexico.
The National Guard is a component of the US armed forces, but has a dual dependency: the federal authorities and the authorities of each particular state, if necessary, and instructs the National Guard to combat the consequences of natural disasters and often to quell major unrest. National Guard elements can also be sent to combat zones.
Preventing the entry of illegal immigrants into the United States from the territory of Mexico and building a separation wall with it was one of Trump's key promises in his 2016 campaign.[/ltr]
