    A group of the US Congress initiated an urgent legislation to save the archives of the Jews of Iraq.
     
    The beginning of the story, revealed by the Jewish news agency JTA in the second Gulf War with the invasion of US forces to Iraq in 2003.
     
    US forces then moved the archive and included rare material from the history of the Jews of Babylon, for its documentation and maintenance in the United States.
     
    In the 15 years that have elapsed since then, historians and archivists have studied and documented the material digitally.
     
    In addition, the Iraqi government and the US administration signed a material return agreement at the end of its maintenance and archiving to Iraq.
     
    The archive contains 2700 manuscripts, including a copy of the Old Testament from 1568, copies of the Babylonian Talmud and extensive information on the lives of the Jews of Babylon and Iraq over the years. The archive was in poor condition, and the US administration spent $ 3 million on its 10-year maintenance and maintenance. Since 2013 there has been a traveling exhibition of archives in the United States.
    The US State Department, which signed the deal, plans to return the archives to Iraq in September, assuming the Iraqi government succeeds in keeping it.
     
    In recent months, attempts have been made to persuade the US State Department to back down and abandon the agreement, but after these failed attempts, a group of senior senators from both parties has joined in recent days and initiated a law that keeps the archives in the United States. The senators are three: Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democratic minority in Congress; Richard Blumenstal, who is also from the Democratic Party; and Tommy is from the Republican Party.
    In a statement issued by the three called on the administration to reopen negotiations with the Iraqi government to keep the archives in America longer. "There was no logic in returning the archives to Iraq, while the absolute majority of Iraqi Jews and their heirs live outside," said Senator Tommy.
    Chuck Schumer said: "There is no substitute for these treasures, they belong to a place where they can be kept and the Jewish people have access to them, so they should not be returned to Iraq."
