American official: The release of those detained by Hamas will require a very significant cessation of the conflict

A senior White House official stressed, on Saturday, the need to reach a "significant cessation of the conflict" between Hamas and Israel with the aim of releasing those detained by the movement, whose number the Israeli army estimated at at least 240.
As fighting rages between Israel, an ally of the United States, and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the official spoke during a telephone statement to the media about “very serious discussions” currently taking place, but explained that “there is currently no agreement” on a cessation of hostilities.
The official, who preferred to remain anonymous, added: “Let us hope that we will have good news to provide during another telephone briefing, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee that.”
He pointed out that "no one knows" the exact number of detainees, adding that the number is "far more than 100 and perhaps more than 200." He stressed that the release of such a large number of people "would require a fairly significant cessation of hostilities."
But the official warned that "there is absolutely no guarantee that this will happen or when it will happen."
The official confirmed that Washington is conducting a "continuous dialogue" with the Israeli leadership and asking it "difficult questions" about the method of choosing military targets and the results of these choices.
He stressed that the Israelis "largely revised their initial plan" in light of this dialogue, without going into details.
The official touched on the evacuation of Palestinian civilians in the southern Gaza Strip, especially those who also hold foreign passports.
He said that Hamas initially presented a “list” of the names of wounded Palestinians who needed to be evacuated, and it turned out that “a third” of these were “members” and “fighters” in the movement, adding, “This was unacceptable to Egypt, to us, and to Israel,” in his justification for the time taken. It took him a while to open the Rafah crossing in the south of the besieged Strip.
CNN quoted an American official as saying that the ceasefire in Gaza depends on Israel’s guarantee that the events of October 7 will not be repeated, explaining that the ceasefire was not appropriate given the size and nature of the October 7 attacks.
The American official, according to CNN, confirmed that Washington is seriously calling on Israel to activate humanitarian truces, pointing out that the US administration expects the air strikes on Gaza to decline and to focus on the ground campaign in the coming days.
It is noteworthy that Israel informed US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, yesterday, Friday, that there would be no truce unless the detainees were released, while the US Secretary of State informed them that a humanitarian truce would help confront pressures due to support for its operation, according to what the American website “Axios” reported.
