Senior US official resigns over "sexual harassment"

John Conyers, the US House of Representatives Representative, has resigned as Democratic Minority Leader of the Judicial Affairs Committee after years of sexual harassment.
Conyers, 88, denied in a statement the charges against him and stressed that he was "eagerly waiting to be clarified" before the Ethics Committee in Congress, Reuters reported.
"I thought that my presence as a Democrat in the highest post on the Judicial Affairs Committee would not serve her efforts in the ethics committee's investigation," the Detroit attorney said.
Conyers admitted he had paid more than $ 27,000 in 2015 to a former parliamentary colleague who had accused him of being dismissed because he had blocked his attempts.
The report was published Monday by Buzzid, who also received testimony from former co-workers and aid to Conyers in 2014, describing his attempts to harass women working with him, including their contacts.
Democratic House opposition leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement acknowledging Koeniers' resignation that she was taking "every charge of sexual harassment very seriously."
"There is nothing to allow sexual harassment, whatever the contributions of anyone," she said in a tweet with the text.
