WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump's administration is close to imposing sanctions on companies in Germany and other European countries linked to the construction of the Russian Northern Gas pipeline, the Foreign Policy magazine reported.
The magazine quoted three different sources in Washington that the United States is currently considering various methods to boycott this project, but they tend to impose sanctions themselves.
"They will not stop in front of anything with a view to boycotting the Northern Torrent," said a US official who declined to be named.
For its part, said a representative of the US State Department, that companies that are still associated with the Russian energy field, working in this area on the "special responsibility." "We have clearly understood that companies engaged in the supply of Russian energy through pipelines are doing business that could be subject to sanctions," she said.
The National Security Adviser, John Bolton, and other US officials consider the North Sea-2 a threat to the security of the United States and Europe and intend to impede its implementation, the magazine quoted another source as saying.
"Everything is at stake. The administration at the government level is trying to block the implementation of the North Nile project. "
A representative of the US National Security Council, said the work of the US administration aimed to reduce Russia's economic impact on Europe.
He added: "There is agreement in the US government that the" Northern Torrent-2 "increases dependency (dependency of Europe) to Russia."
For his part, said a European diplomat associated with energy in his speech to "Foreign Policy" that the US sanctions is the only thing that may hinder the construction of the Russian pipeline. "If there are no serious steps on the part of the US government, the North Stream will be built."
The magazine pointed out that possible US sanctions would strengthen differences between the United States and Germany, which express growing discontent with Trump's policy in many areas ranging from trade tariffs to Iran's nuclear deal.
The project "Northern Torrent -2" project to build two gas pipelines from the coast of Russia across the Baltic Sea to Germany. A number of European countries are opposed to the implementation of this project, including Ukraine, which fears losing its revenues from the transit of Russian gas through its territory.
