A member of the Commission for Human Rights, Dr. Fadel Al-Gharawi, confirmed that the right to the environment in Iraq is witnessing many violations, which has become a threatening factor for millions of citizens.
Al-Gharawi said in a statement that "at a time when the world celebrates the World Environment Day, Iraq is suffering from desertification and the spread of pollutants and waste, and this directly affects the lives and health of citizens by contracting cancer and respiratory diseases, as well as agriculture and water."
Al-Gharawi added, "We call on the government and its relevant ministry to launch a campaign to combat desertification and plant forests and trees, as well as establish waste recycling plants, prevent all factories from dumping their waste in rivers, move all factories outside cities, launch water flows to treat the saline tongue, and establish specialized hospitals to treat cancer and respiratory diseases."
He continued, "We call on the government to assume its responsibility to guarantee the right of the environment to the citizen and to release compensation to all citizens who have been affected by the deteriorating environmental situation and the wrong policy for managing this file, for which millions of Iraqis have paid."
