On Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that passports were granted urgently and free of charge to return a number of Iraqis stranded between Belarus and Lithuania to Iraq, noting the measures it has taken to return them to those areas on a voluntary basis.
Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahaf said in a statement to NRT Arabic, (12 November 2021), that "Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi directed the formation of a higher committee to take care of the issue of Iraqi immigrants headed by the Foreign Ministry and membership of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, where the committee took a number of measures and measures to support and return individuals The Iraqis who are voluntarily present on the border strip between Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.
Al-Sahaf added, "Among these measures is ensuring the safety and security of Iraqis in those areas, stopping travel trips from Iraqi territory to Belarus to the Belarusian capital (Minsk), as well as continuing return flights from Belarus to Baghdad or to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to return stranded citizens. And to raise awareness for all travelers to those areas of the need not to fall into the trap of human smuggling and trafficking networks,” noting that “with the direct guidance of Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein, the Iraqi embassy in Moscow and Poland was instructed to allocate diplomatic cadres to go to the border strip and grant transit passports to Iraqis to facilitate the process.” The voluntary repatriation, as the ministry was able to return hundreds of stranded Iraqis during the last period.
