The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Wednesday, that Iraq is no longer required to pay the money after its exit from Chapter VII, indicating that this step is a major development to strengthen its relations with its surroundings.
And the spokesman for the ministry, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, said, "The Security Council held a special session to hear the briefing of the United Nations Compensation Committee (UNCC) on the final report of the committee related to compensation provided by Iraq during the second Gulf War," noting that "Iraq participated in the meeting, represented by Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein. to give his word.
Al-Sahhaf quoted the minister’s speech as saying that “Iraq has adhered to the decisions of the Security Council and fully cooperated with the United Nations to pay the last batch of compensation amounting to 52.4 billion dollars, which lasted for 30 years, and this file was closed permanently,” noting that “the Security Council resolution approved in this session. It came as confirmation that the Compensation Committee had fulfilled its mandate in full, and had completed consideration of any future claims on the issue of compensation, and Iraq was no longer required to pay any additional sums of money in the future, or to deal with Chapter VII procedures.
He added that "the council's decision today reflects Iraq's tireless efforts to fully fulfill its obligations in accordance with the timetables and percentages approved by the Compensation Committee, despite the difficult conditions that Iraq and its people have gone through in the past years of bearing the burdens and economic costs of fighting terrorism and taking its role at the forefront of the world's countries to confront ISIS terrorist gangs." And the cost of programs to return internally displaced people to their cities, and programs to restore stability, services, provision of aid, and reconstruction costs, which were accompanied by major economic crises that afflicted the world.
He pointed out that "extracting Iraq from the procedures of Chapter VII, preserving the rights and funds of Iraq and its people and its international legal entitlements, and protecting it from any future claims within the framework of the international effort led by the United Nations, based on the Charter of the United Nations and the rules and principles of international law in justice and equity, is the bulk of what he sought Iraq until it is included in the Security Council resolution,” noting that “the efforts of the Government of Iraq to fully fulfill its obligations towards the international community and the State of Kuwait, is a major development that will strengthen Iraq’s relations with its regional and international surroundings.”
He thanked all members of the Security Council, friendly countries and the State of Kuwait for the great cooperation with Iraq in ending this important file and working to build a better future for Iraq and its people.
