Israel called on the United Nations Security Council on Saturday to end what it called "Iranian provocations" in the Middle East, accusing Tehran of violating UN resolutions.
"This is not the first time we warn you of the dangerous and destabilizing measures in the region that Iran is taking," Israel's permanent representative to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said in a letter to the Security Council.
Danone added that the incident of the infiltration of an Iranian aircraft into Israeli airspace confirms that these dangerous measures are a reality, stressing that Israel will defend its civilians and will not tolerate any violation of its sovereignty.
In his letter, Danon said that Iran "violates Security Council resolutions" and called on the Council to "condemn this dangerous step and end the Iranian provocations."
On Saturday, Israel announced the intercept of an Iranian drone after it penetrated Israeli airspace and launched air strikes against targets it said were Iranian in Syria. Syrian activists said the raids targeted the T4 air base near the city of Palmyra in central Syria.
Syrian air defenses responded to the Israeli fighter jets and managed to shoot down an F-16 fighter . Israel confirmed that the pilots had jumped off the plane and one of them was seriously wounded, but the Syrian Defense Ministry said it had destroyed more than one Israeli aircraft.
Israel then launched intensive strikes on Syria, announcing that the bombing had lasted 12 targets, including 3 Syrian air defense batteries and 4 Iranian targets near Damascus.
For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry denied any role in sending the plane to the north of Israel or to drop the Israeli fighter. Finished
