The International Space Agency (NASA) announced on Saturday the launch of the first spacecraft to explore the depths of Mars.
The US agency said in a press statement that "the robotic geological vehicle" Insight "set off on its journey to the Red Planet, to find out more information about Mars.
The geological vehicle will be equipped with a hammer and a seismic monitoring device to be able to obtain parts of Mars and return them to Earth.
The Insight was launched from California instead of the Canaviral base in Florida, making it the first space mission to launch from the West Coast.
The vehicle, which is more than 5 meters long, will take more than 6 months to reach Mars and begin unprecedented geological exploration totaling about $ 1 billion in a joint mission involving scientists from the United States, France, Germany and other European countries.
"The task will be to investigate what is inside Mars, to give us an idea of the size of the game, the shape and the crust, and compare it to the Earth, to understand the origin of our solar system," NASA's chief scientist Jim Green said.
