Agence France-Presse said the protesters continued to close today a large number of roads in the center of the city of Karbala and at the entrances, a day after security forces fired live bullets at demonstrators in the city, killing at least one person and injuring dozens.
The agency added that plumes of smoke are still rising from Karbala, noting that the authorities responsible for the Shiite shrines have decided to close religious seminaries in the cities of Karbala, Najaf and Hilla.
In Diwaniya, south of Karbala, government departments and schools were closed, while demonstrators blocked most roads with burning tires to prevent employees from reaching their workplaces, and security forces withdrew to avoid confrontation with protesters.

Government departments and schools in the cities of Kut, Basra, Hilla and Najaf were also closed, and sit-ins continued without violence, the source said.

Protests continued in Basra and Nasiriyah, where major oil fields are located, and protesters protested at the state oil company Dhi Qar east of Nasiriyah, but work continued in the oil fields located in both provinces.
In several southern cities, demonstrators continue to flock to the sit-ins, amid the closure of key roads and vital bridges.
In Basra, despite the intervention of security forces to remove the demonstrators from the gate of the port of Umm Qasr commercial, the closure of the road leading to the port caused the disruption of trade by 50%, according to the Associated Press quoted officials in the province.

Abdul - Mahdi said that the authorities are determined to enforce the law in the face of non - peaceful demonstration  (island)
Adel Abdul Mahdi stressed during a cabinet meeting yesterday evening that the state can not stand idly by, otherwise the system will collapse, he said.
He cautioned that the State was under intense pressure and that it was in self-defense and had a duty to protect public order and citizens alike.
The Iraqi Prime Minister said that the authorities are determined to enforce the law in the face of non-peaceful demonstrations, stressing the protection of the right to peaceful protest, the rights of citizens to life, work and study, and securing private and public property, and take legal measures to ensure the continuation of the work of state institutions and the interests of citizens.
During the cabinet meeting, Abdul-Mahdi said that many of the laws that the demonstrators are demanding could be amended, but said that this must be in accordance with the law and in a peaceful manner, and talked about the political movement within the parliament and within Iraqi decision-making centers.
Commenting on Abdul-Mahdi's remarks, Al-Jazeera's Baghdad bureau chief, Walid Ibrahim, said he wanted to stand halfway on the demonstrations.
Ibrahim added that the Iraqi prime minister did not want to be described as against the demonstrations, but in the end he says he can only assume his responsibilities as commander-in-chief and commander of the executive.
Under the pressure of the protests, the Iraqi parliament began to consider the amendment of the election law and the law governing the Electoral Commission.
